It was a beautiful small ship only 800 passengers, and all teak and brass. I believe the ship was acquired by Sir John Julius Norwich's company "Voyages to Antiquity" and now sails the classical ports of the Mediterranean during each season. Our last stop was Disney's private island, Castaway Cay. They cancelled all excursions that day and many of the staff that usually stays on the island were packing to evacuate. I came up to New York and then boarded the Caribbean Princess heading to Canada the day Irene hit. I still have the scarf from when the Independence was christened. My grandmother was friends with the President of American Export and his wife and my Grandmom was invited. I was very young (I think it was around 1952) and I always remembering her coming home with the scarf.</p> <p>Epirotiki was the first ever cruise line I sailed with, out of Greece, in 1982 or 1983. To this day I can't remember the name of the boat (too small to be a ship)but I do remember the cruise. We had the owner's cabin (what a great way to start my cruising career). It even had a bidet. It was so small that there was no elevator. </p> <p>I was on crutches, with a broken foot, so had to miss several ports because we had to tender in all but one. Tendering in those days wasn't as easy as it is now! Even without going onshore, it was a beautiful cruise. There were only 6 English speaking people on board and we were 2 of them! Everyone else was French. We lost one couple half way through and they were replaced by a French couple.
