New feature – Add links to roll call discussions

Monday, June 20th, 2011

We just added a new feature to the MeetOnCruise roll calls – links!  You can now add a link to another website or to other pages on MeetOnCruise (e.g. the port guides) in the roll call discussions.

How?  Simple.  Add “http://” or “www.” (without the quotes) before any website address and once you post your message the phrase will be turned into a link.  For e.g. If you’d like to point folks in a roll call to the Bermuda port guide, simply type http://meetoncruise.com/ports/Bermuda.php in the comment box and we’ll turn this into a link automatically.

Enjoy this feature.  One note of caution though, please don’t post any explicit, SPAM or outright self-promotion links as these will be taken down immediately.  We want to keep the roll call discussions informative and fun for everyone!  Questions or comments?  You can always get in touch with us via email at hello@meetoncruise.com.

One last reminder, you do NOT need to be checked in on a particular roll call to participate in the discussion.  So, if you just came back from an Norwegian Epic cruise and want to tell future cruisers what to expect, jump in to the discussions (currently there are 15 active roll calls for the Epic!) and feel free to post some links.

Photo Albums are Here!

Monday, May 30th, 2011

Photo albums are the newest feature on MeetOnCruise! We all want to see each others’ photos from our cruises..and as of today, any member can upload individual photos into their very own album.  Here’s how it works:

- Sign in and go to your profile page.  Then scroll down to the photos section and click “Add”.

- In the small window, enter the name of your album, the ship you cruised on and the embarkation port.

- Next, you can choose up to 12 photos from your computer to upload to MeetOnCruise.  Don’t forget to give them a caption!

- Thats it.  Your album is automatically saved here:  MeetOnCruise.com/pics.

TIP:  Want to upload more than 12 pics to your album?  Simply go through the above steps again and provide the same album name.  We’ll group these together for you.

Some of our members have already been busy uploading pictures – this is one of my favorites from MeetOnCruise member Vister‘s cruise to Alaska.

Your turn – lets see your cruise pics!

As always, if you have feedback about the site, don’t hesitate to email us at hello@meetoncruise.com .  Enjoy!

New Feature: Update your cruise info!

Monday, April 25th, 2011

“How many cruises have you been on? Which ships…and where did you go?”

These are questions many of us cruisers get. And typically, they are from first time cruisers looking to get some advice from someone like you that has several cruises under your belt. An easy way to answer this question is to simply point the person to your MeetOnCruise profile. The link is simple: http://meetoncruise.com/users/Your MeetOnCruise Username.

For example, here is member Doug999 from CruiseRadio who has been on a whopping 17 cruises including Carnival Fascination, Oasis of the Seas and Celebrity Eclipse: http://meetoncruise.com/users/doug999

And here is Heather who has been on 13 cruises including Norwegian Epic, Freedom of the Seas and Carnival Paradise (4 times!): http://meetoncruise.com/users/heatherlforrester

We just added a new page to make it super easy for you to update your cruise information.  Here’s how it works:

1. Simply log in to meetoncruise, go to your profile and click the “Edit” link under Past or Upcoming cruises.

2. You’ll see a screen like this where you can easily edit (or delete) your cruise dates, destination, etc.

We hope this makes it easier to update your cruise info. First, log in. Then, go to meetoncruise.com/profile/my-cruises and update your info.

And next time someone asks about your cruise history – send ‘em to your profile on MeetOnCruise! Thanks again for your continued support!

So, how many cruises have YOU been on?

Hey good looking, let’s see your profile pic!

Homer Simpson likes cruises

First, thank you for spreading the word about MeetOnCruise!  The community now has over 1400 members and 119 active roll calls!  The last few months have been great as the website has continued to get better – thanks to your feedback.

Second, we heard from a few of you that our 1MB limit on the size of profile pics was too small.  Given all the new smartphones spit out pictures at anywhere from 1.5MB to 3.5MB (and some higher), this was clearly out of date.  So, we’ve upped the limit to 4MB (which is the same as Facebook).

To add  or update your profile pic, first log in, go to ‘Edit Profile‘ (click your username on top right corner of screen) .  Then click ‘Edit Image’ and upload your pic.  If you are already logged in, then you can simply go here.  Funny pics are encouraged!

So, those of you without a profile pic – you know who you are – let’s see that mugshot:)  We’re glad to have you as part of this community and as always, send your feedback to hello@meetoncruise.com – we are listening.

What’s your favorite classic or retired cruise ship?

Monday, April 11th, 2011

Cunard Vistafjord

Recently, we’ve had several users ask for the ability to add a retired ship to their past cruises.  As we all know, ships get bought by other cruise lines or they get renamed, or sometimes simply retire from ‘active duty’.

So, based on your feedback, we’ve now added several classic / retired ships to our database.  You can now add any of these ships to your past cruises (through your profile page).  Here are the retired ships we’ve added so far:

  • Cunard Vistajford
  • Carnival Holiday
  • Norwegian Majesty
  • Carnival Celebration
  • Regal Princess
  • Sovereign of the Seas
  • Norwegian Dream
  • SS Majestic
  • Sun Viking
  • Carnival Carnivale
  • Carnival Festivale
  • Carnival Tropicale
  • Update:  Added Queen Elizabeth 2 and SS Arcadia

It’s kinda fun to recall these ships and see how much the ships themselves have changed over the years.  I mean, do you think that the designers of the Carnival Carnivale would have predicted that today’s ships would have surf pools, water coasters,  or sports parks?!

Carnival Carnivale

What other classic or retired ships do you want us to add?  Let us know! And keep the feedback coming – we’re listening.

P.S. If you want to take a trip down memory lane, check out ShipsNostalgia.com – cool website with images and commentary on classic ships.

Disney Cruise 2012 roll calls now available!

Disney Cruise roll calls
Unless you haven’t heard yet, Disney Cruise Line recently announced some BIG changes to their 2012 itineraries.  The big news is Disney is coming to New York city!  Yes, I’m biased because I live here:)  Regardless, it will be a nice boost for the city and all the ‘Mickey Mouse’ fans in the Northeast can now drive to Manhattan to board their cruise.  NY Disney fans will have a choice of 8 night sailings to the Bahamas and 5 night sailings to Canada & New England coasts.

Other cities that won out and will have Disney ships sailing from them are: Galveston, Texas and Seattle, Washington.

You can read all about the new itineraries on Gene Sloan’s Cruise Log, Ship Critic or Disney’s site.

Why is this a big deal?  2 reasons.  First, Disney is a premium cruise line where the average cabin fare can be can be 15-30% higher than the mainstream lines.  So, these high spending passengers are exactly the folks every port wants for pre and post cruise stays.  Second, Disney has traditionally only sailed from Port Canaveral in Orlando, Florida.  This is their first foray into other homeport cities.

So, for all you Disney fans who are cruising on the Magic, Wonder, or the new Dream and Fantasy ships – you can now join their cruise roll calls on MeetOnCruise!  All the 2011 and 2012 itineraries are available via the home page or the advanced search page.  We’ve listed some of our favorite new 2012 itineraries and their roll calls here:

Disney Magic leaving New York for the Bahamas for 8 nights

Disney Magic leaving New York for the Canada and New England for 5 nights

Disney Magic  leaving Galveston, Texas for the Western Caribbean for 7 nights

Disney Fantasy (brand new ship for 2012!) leaving Orlando, Florida for the Western Caribbean for 7 nights

Disney Wonder leaving Seattle, Washington for Alaska for 7 nights

Disney Dream (new ship launched this year) leaving Orlando, Florida for the Bahamas for 3, 4 and 5 nights

Going on a Disney cruise?  Enjoy and join your roll call to meet your ship mates before you cruise!

Invite Facebook friends to MeetOnCruise
We started MeetOnCruise so people who love to cruise can easily meet other folks online.  Well, until today, there wasn’t an easy way to invite your friends to come over and join the fun.  We just added a new feature that makes this a snap!  Here’s how it works:

  1. Go to meetoncruise.com and click on the Facebook login icon at the top
  2. Go to meetoncruise.com/invitefriends.php
  3. Select which Facebook friends you want to invite and click ‘Send MeetOnCruise Invitation’. That’s it!

We would love your help in spreading the word about MeetOnCruise.  And let’s face it, MeetOnCruise will be a whole lot more fun with your friends:)  Thanks in advance for letting your friends know about MeetOnCruise.com!

Solo Cruising: What You Need to Know

Friday, February 18th, 2011

Editor’s note: Just today, a Twitter follower tweeted this to us: “..love cruising but I don’t like going solo”.  I think there is a negative perception about cruising or traveling solo. In today’s guest post, Aaron Saunders, explains why solo cruising may not be as scary as you may think..and breaks down everything you need to know before you sail solo.  This article originally ran on Aaron’s blog, From the Deck Chair, on Feb 13th, 2011 and has been republished here with his permission. Enjoy!

Will that be champagne for one or two? Photo © Aaron Saunders

Chances are, it’s going to happen to all of us at some point in our cruising “career” – the one voyage where a significant other, family member, or friend isn’t available to cruise with you.  What’s a cruiseaholic to do?

Keep going – solo, that is.

Cruising alone isn’t as scary as it might sound.  After all, you’re on a cruise ship with a few hundred or thousand other guests, some of whom are undoubtedly sailing solo as well.  Even then, most people aboard any ship are there to meet new friends and enjoy themselves, and with cruise lines like NCL, P&O, and Royal Caribbean building solo-occupancy staterooms again, there has never been a better time to set off on your own.

I have taken five solo cruises: four with Holland America Line, and one with Royal Caribbean.  I can’t say one really does it better than the other; it just depends on your personal tastes.  Do I miss my fiancee?  Of course!  But there are certain voyages she has no desire to go on, and I respect that.  Trust me, you never want to force your significant other or friend into a voyage they don’t want – it’s a recipe for trouble.

But before you do sail solo, here’s some things to keep in mind.

Solo and Single are Two Different Things
Contrary to what you might think, people sailing solo aren’t necessarily all single.  This isn’t The Love Boat, after all!  But regardless of relationship status, solo cruisers are looking to mingle and meet new friends, and cruises provide a unique opportunity to do so.  The best way to do this is to involve yourself in activities that encourage team participation.  Trivia, scavenger hunts, lectures, Name that Tune – all good activities to meet people on a regular basis, since many cruises include these events daily.  There are also usually solo cruiser “mixers” in the evening (Holland America in particular does a great job of these.)

Beware the Single Occupancy Rate
Because – very technically – you’re depriving the cruise line of the additional revenue by occupying a stateroom meant for two people, most lines will charge a single supplement.  This can range anywhere from 110% of the per-person cruise fare all the way to 200% – the same amount as you would have paid had you sailed with someone else.  But don’t despair!  Many lines usually offer discounted single supplements on select sailings.  Supplements also tend to be higher for Veranda and Suite categories than inside or outside staterooms.

Some single-supplement-friendly lines?  Carnival, Holland America, and Silversea all offer decent single supplement rates, and in some cases waive them entirely for select sailings.  Historically, Celebrity and Royal Caribbean have consistently charged 200% of the per-person fare, though this is beginning to change.  I sailed aboard Grandeur of the Seas in 2009 for only 10% more than the per-person fare – making the quick five-day voyage more than affordable.

Socialize – Pre-Cruise
In this digital age, why wait until you’re onboard to meet new friends?  The internet offers several great resources to “meet” additional cruisers on your sailing long before you first step aboard.

One of the best sites for this is MeetOnCruise. You can create a profile, find your sailing, and see who else will be traveleing with you.  If your sailing is a long way off, be patient as new cruisers add themselves in advance of your departure date.  Sometimes groups organize get-togethers while onboard, while other times it can just be nice to share information about your ports, shore excursions, and ship.

CruiseCritic‘s Roll Call forums also provide an excellent way to meet people on your sailing before you even leave the house.

Have Fun
The bottom line: everyone is on a cruise to have a good time.  Regardless of which line or ship you’re sailing on, this one fact holds true. Embrace it.  Get out, mingle, interact, and do everything you would if you were traveling with another person.

Enjoy yourself, and you’re certain to enjoy your cruise – whether you’re sailing by yourself or not.

The Port Guides are Here!

Tuesday, February 1st, 2011

Searching the Internet for information on a particular port or island can be as productive as having a stack of travel books dropped on you – sure you’ll find the information eventually, but it doesn’t mean the experience won’t be painful. It’s with this experience in mind that we at MeetOnCruise created our Cruise Guide pages:  FAQs, Cruise Line and Ship Guides and now our NEW Port Guides. Our goal is to gather the information that would take you hours to find and put it on one easy to read page, for each port. We’ve also incorporated many maps, pictures and videos for you to be able to get a taste for what this port has to offer and what you will need, to get the most from your visit.

What currency is used on Grand Turk? What is there to do in Colon, Panama? What food must you try while in San Juan? These are examples of question you may have when planning your cruise.

Should I plan on using a taxi when I get to port in Curacao? How can I get to a place to make an affordable call home, while in St. Maarten? Should I bring my golf clubs when I visit Coco Cay? Sometimes you just should not wait to get to the port to have some of these questions answered. Knowing what is available to you will allow you to maximize your experience; and knowing how to get there will help you avoid wasting time and money.

We’ve released the first 14 Caribbean port guides and will be adding new ones every week as they are completed. You can find information on how the thrill seeker can be satisfied on Labadee and how the beach bum can best enjoy his day on Aruba. You can find all the best places to shop in Antigua and what makes a great souvenir for under $25 in Cozumel.

The Port Guides, as with everything else on MeetOnCruise, live within the MeetOnCruise community. These pages are not static – they change as the information changes. As our cruise community grows, the experience shared on these ports will also help shape these guides, providing the best and most up to date information. Please check them out here and let us know what you think!  And feel free to click on the “Like” and “Tweet” buttons on the top right of any of the Guides:)

Roll Call!

Morning Roll Call!

What exactly is a roll call?  Wikipedia explains:

Roll call is the calling of the names of people from a list (roll) to determine the presence or absence of the listed people (also known as a register in countries such as the United Kingdom).

Roll calls are not new, as some of you may remember roll calls from your classroom or military days, however, with a cruise they are a whole lot more fun :) We launched this site to help people meet others going on their cruise, BEFORE the cruise.  Until recently, there was no easy way on MeetOnCruise to see all the active roll calls.  We’ve fixed that!

Last week we launched a new page that shows you all the active roll calls on MeetOnCruise.  Check it out here! Basically, any time at least one member “checks in” for their upcoming cruise, we create a new roll call.  As of now, there are already 51 active roll calls on 38 different cruise ships!

On this roll calls page, you can see the number of members who are going on the cruise, the cruise line and ship, the date the cruise sails and the number of views each roll call has.

Here are some interesting stats:

Most popular roll call (# of views):  Royal Caribbean’s Enchantment of the Seas to Bermuda on 4/11 - 67 views, 3 members are going.  The Carnival Sensation to Bahamas on 2/6 is a close second at 59 views.

Cruise line with most roll calls:  Royal Caribbean and Carnival are tied at 11 each

Ship with most roll calls: The brand new Disney Dream – 3 active roll calls!  3/13, 5/1 and 7/1.

Going on a cruise and want to join the roll call?  Simple, go to the home page and enter your ship and sail date…or use the advanced search.  Not cruising, and just want to see the active roll calls?  Go to the new roll calls page.

Enjoy and let us know what you think in the comments section below or you can always email us at hello (at) meetoncruise (dot) com. Happy cruising!

Have you filled out your “Cruise Resume”?

Thursday, January 20th, 2011

We just released the brand new profile page (aka – Your Cruise Resume)!  On this new page you can tell everyone which cruises you have been on (cruise history), which ones you are going on (upcoming cruises), your reviews, and much more!  Here is a breakdown of the new features.

  • Snapshot of You - works just like most any social network:  folks can see your picture, a little About You, your “Stats” (cruises, reviews, etc.) and any contact info (including your Twitter and Facebook links) you wish to share.  Remember, you can always change the privacy settings of your information by going to Profile > Settings.  There are 3 easy settings for each piece of info – private (no one, except you can see), members, and everybody.
  • Activity - shows a nice record of everything you have been up to on the site – comments, new reviews, roll calls, etc.
  • Add Cruise History - easily add all your past cruises.  Only the ship and date you cruised are required.
  • Upcoming Cruise – add your future cruises by simply finding the specific cruise you are going on and “Check in”.  We’ll automatically add this cruise to the “Upcoming” cruise section of your profile (the easiest way to do this is go to the home page, enter your ship and cruise date, then click ‘Continue’.)
  • Reviews – view all your cruise reviews here. If you haven’t already, check out the new Review Page (video here.) Among other improvements, you can now review your embarkation port/city on the Review Page.
  • Share - with one click, show off your cruise resume to your Facebook, Twitter and email friends.
  • Tips – Have a quick tip about a ship (e.g. Go to the aft of deck 9 for the sailaway!)?  Add it here.
  • Photos – upload your cruise photos when you out a review, then show them off on your profile page.
  • Videos – add the link(s) of your vacation videos on YouTube and we’ll link them from your profile.

Is Your Vacation Dollar Safe?

Thursday, July 15th, 2010

Many residents, industries and planned vacations (not to mention oil soaked wildlife that is lucky if it gets a dish soap bath) lie in the wake of the Gulf Oil Spill disaster. The way that the tourism industry has reacted to the spill runs the gambit: from closing their eyes, with a nothing to see here attitude, to getting out in front and showing webcam evidence that there is nothing to see here… yet. Some hotels in Florida have not only uploaded live feeds to show their beaches tar-ball free, but have even adjusted their cancellation policy to accommodate worried prospective guests.  Ability to adapt to circumstances is what separates surviving industries and businesses from those that experience death by emaciation. So what has the cruise industry done to show its flexibility to meet and alleviate its customer’s fears… remember above when I mentioned industries closing their eyes?

While my frustration festers with this oil spill and the cruise lines inaction, I decided to investigate accommodations of cancellation fees for cruises, like the ones made by the aforementioned hotels. What I found is that not only were there no accommodations being made, but cancellation policies, across the board, border on unfair. (I also discovered that finding information on cruise websites is not easy, but that is a discussion for a different blog post.)

If you were to book an inside cabin on a 7 day Eastern Caribbean cruise aboard Norwegian Epic in mid September your cruise fare would be $679 and your deposit amount would be $250 (37% or total fare, in this case) per person. You might ask: “Why are you mentioning the deposit fee?” Well, because according to NCL’s Cancellation Policy: Cancellation fees will begin immediately once money has been applied to the reservation.” This policy also states that if you cancel 75-30 days before your cruise, your cancellation fee is your deposit.  Ouch!

Now I don’t mean to pick on NCL because Royal Caribbean Cruise Line has the same policy and Carnival is only $50 less, but the point is the same: In a time when there is uncertainty and perceived inconveniences for cruise passengers, either effectively communicate that the ports of call and shipping lanes are unaffected or relax the cancellation policy in a show of good faith.

The truth is, however, the cruise lines, such as the above mentioned, as well as, Princess, Disney, Costa… will not change their policy. Instead they will continue to advise their customers to purchase travel insurance to cover the costs of any cancellation that comes about because of unforeseen circumstances. While I echo this advice, I will add that it is important for anyone purchasing a cruise to know their cruise line of choice’s cancellation policy and know their travel insurance options before they purchase.

Cruising continues to be one of the best value propositions available as a vacation option. The variety of things to do, see, eat and drink on a cruise is relatively unmatched for your vacation dollar, but it is still your dollar. Protecting your investment with vacation insurance is a good step, but the best step you can take is getting informed.

Here at MeetOnCruise.com, we are trying to help by offering not just a forum with a long semi-comprehensible thread, but a community of travel experts, cruise enthusiast and future ship mates that you can interact with and hopefully answer questions you might have. We’ve recently added a Frequently Asked Question (FAQ) section to each cruise line (including the above mentioned, as well as, P&O, Holland America, MSC, Celebrity and more to come) in the Cruise Guide section of the website. This FAQ section will hopefully begin and add to the conversation in this community and help you, the cruiser become better informed. Let us know what you think about this new section and if there are some other questions you feel should be a part of the FAQs. Let us know and we will research the answer and consider for inclusion in this section.
